Suzaku Ibun: Daijiin Temple, Pt. 3 (Or, "The Good, the Bad, and the Byakko")

Ni-hao!

Another big chunk of Ibun today as we at last gallop towards the end of Part 2, Chapter 2! I won't be posting any translations next week since I'll be on holiday, so I figured I'd wrap up the Daijiin Arc this week and give everyone a moment to catch their breaths before we move on to the next big plot point.

We've got a big Multiverse Moment this week, so keep your eyes peeled for the "dialog options," and here's hoping you got those 4 Favorability Points (FP) for Chiriko! Otherwise, well... you might wanna get those tissues ready. ;_;

Hit the jump for murder, mayhem, and Miboshi!

==Scene: Temple Hallway==
…..
You: Where did you go!? Misaki-chan! Tatara-san!
I’d lost sight of them both.
You: Where are you!?
To be honest, I was impatient.
I felt like Misaki-chan had gone far away from me—again.

[Dialog Options]
The second seishi you chose to accompany you was:
[Note: I only have the ones marked in blue]
  • Tamahome
  • Hotohori
  • Nuriko
  • Chichiri
  • Tasuki
  • Mitsukake
  • Chiriko

Chichiri
Chichiri: Priestess of Suzaku. You should calm down no da.
You: B-but...
Chichiri: Thinking about it won’t do you any good, so thinking about worst-case scenarios will do you even less good no da.
Chichiri: For now, you can focus on pushing the two of us on no da. (1)
Chichiri: I’m sure your best friend is waiting for you no da.
You: Mm!

Chiriko
Chiriko: [Your Name]-san! P...please calm down!
You: But... Misaki-chan...
Chiriko: It’ll be all right. From what you told me, it sounds like she’s hesitating.
Chiriko: I’m sure that, deep down, she’s thinking about you.
Chiriko: I’m sure she’ll understand.
You: ...Chiriko. Mm, okay.

I forced myself to calm down and looked around the temple—

==Scene: Temple Doorway==
{Miboshi & Tatara appear}
You: ...Tatara-san!
Tatara: ...Priestess of... Suzaku...
Miboshi: *chuckles* You Suzaku fellows managed to escape my goblins. Well done.
You: ...Miboshi...
Misaki: You came after me.
You: Misaki-chan...
As soon as I took a step forward—
???: I won’t let you come any closer...
{Nakago appears}
???: The Priestess of Suzaku, [Your Full Name].
???: I’ve heard tell of you, but this is the first time we’ve met in person.
You: You’re...
Nakago: The Seiryuu Celestial Warrior, Nakago.
Misaki: …Nakago...
Nakago: I came up to meet you as soon as I heard that thieves had invaded the temple, Misaki-sama.
Nakago: Let’s be off.
Misaki: ...Okay.
You: Misaki-chan!

  • Tamahome

  • Chiriko

Tasuki
Tasuki: I’m sick of this snail’s pace we’ve been movin’ at...
Tasuki: Just come at me already.
Nakago: Hmph... You have no manners. Thieves are the scum of the earth.
Tasuki: Wh-who the hell’re you callin’ a thief, huh!?
...Tasuki, I don’t think you can really deny that.
>>Return to Standard Dialogue (scroll down)

Chichiri
Chichiri: I’m Chichiri, one of the Suzaku Celestial Warriors.
Chichiri: At the request of the Priestess of Suzaku, I’ve come to retrieve the Priestess of Seiryuu no da.
Nakago: ...You’re quite the little sorcerer, aren’t you?
Chichiri: You’re... considerably skilled as well no da.

>>Return to Standard Dialogue (scroll down)

Chiriko
Chiriko: ...I’m struggling to understand this. Sir, for what purposes do you intend to use her?!
Nakago: “Use her”?
Nakago: I wouldn’t think of it. We have devoted our strength to the Kutou Empire and the Priestess of Seiryuu. That’s all.
Nakago: Our goal is to remain loyal to our priestess and carry out her commands. In essence, is that not why the Celestial Warriors exist?

Nakago: ...However, I’m not the one you’ll be fighting.
Nakago: Miboshi.
Miboshi: Yes, of course.
Goblin: Grrr.
Tatara: Ugh...
You: Tatara-san!

The Seiryuu have the phone box Shinzaho
You have the Shinzaho
Nakago: I’ve no use for you worms. See how long you can last against your opponent, Miboshi.
Nakago: If you value his life, you’ll hand over the Shinzaho.

Nakago: Now, let’s be off. Misaki-sama.
Misaki: Right...
—She left me...
No, this is no time to get depressed.
You: Tatara-san! We’re coming to help you!

The Seiryuu have the Shinzaho
You have the Shinzaho
Miboshi: *chuckles*... Now what shall we do? Priestess of Suzaku, would you like to die?
Miboshi: *chuckles*... If you want to help him, then hand over the Shinzaho.

Miboshi: It seems that his body is badly damaged. If you leave him like this, he’ll die soon.
Tatara: ...Damn... you...
Tatara-san’s in danger. What in the world should I—
Tamahome: [Your Name]! You okay!?
You: Tamahome! You’re all safe!
Tamahome: Psh, like a bunch of goblins could get the best of us!
Miboshi: ...Tch! More of the little rats have come creeping in!
Miboshi: Very well. If you wish to be killed so badly, then I’ll help you with that!
Miboshi: Go! My demon beasts!
Tatara: Ngh...
The second Miboshi let down his guard, Tatara bound him with his vines, and shoved him right into the fanged mouths of the approaching goblins—
—!!
Miboshi: Ah...
You: D-did you get him...?
Tatara: I managed it... somehow...
You: Tatara-san!
Mitsukake: Please, just hang on a moment longer...
You: Well, Mitsukake?
…..
Mitsukake: I’m sorry... but this is neither an injury nor an illness.
Mitsukake: He no longer has the strength to live.
You: ...No...
Tatara: …It’s all right. This must happen to everyone someday...
Tatara: Priestess of... Suzaku...
You: Y-yes?
Tatara: We had to part ways, but... Suzuno and I had no regrets.
Tatara: Our hearts were always linked. Even though we lived in different worlds, we were together...
Tatara: Our feelings were the only things that were never apart, not once—
You: ...Yes.
You: Yes... thank you, so very much.
…..
Their feelings were the only things that were never apart—
Those were Tatara-san’s last words. He had protected the treasure of his beloved—the woman he could never see again—for ninety years.
He kept looking after it for all those years. Just one more way you could tell how much they loved each other.
Chiriko: Is he… dead?
Chiriko…? Oh, I see. His Celestial symbol has disappeared.
You: Yeah. But... Tatara-san looks happy.
Chiriko: Mm...he does…
—!!
Chiriko: Waaaaaah!!
You: Eh... wh-what is it? What’s wrong!?
Chiriko: Ev-everyone... please get out of here! Hurry!
Tamahome: H-hey! Chiriko!!
Chiriko: My body is... being taken over...!
Chiriko: Hmph… *chuckles*...
You: Chiriko! What happened to you!?
Mitsukake: It can’t be...
Chiriko: Fwahahahaha!
Mitsukake: Everyone, get away from Chiriko!
You: Wait... what is it? What’s wrong!?
Mitsukake: That’s not... Chiriko anymore.
Chiriko: *chuckles* ...Indeed it is not.
Chiriko: It is I, the Seiryuu Celestial Warrior, Miboshi.
Chiriko: I have taken this vessel as my own!
Chiriko: This vessel had so many chinks in its armor.
Chiriko: I, Miboshi, shall use this body as I see fit from now on.
You: What are you talking about? Miboshi was just...
Chiriko: Unfortunately my former vessel, the Supreme Patriarch, has died. He’s of no use to me anymore.
Chiriko: I mastered many black arts, but in exchange I lost my original vessel.
Chiriko: So I’ve been capturing vessels that please me and living within them.
Chiriko: Children are especially easy to control.
Chiriko: Now then... how would you like to play with my goblins again?
You: ...This power! Is it...!?
Chichiri: ...He’s summoning the goblins again no da. And they’re first-class!
Tasuki: ...No choice but to take ‘em out!
You: You can’t! If you attack them now, you’ll hurt Chiriko, too!
Tamahome: Dammit! What’re we gonna—!?
You: ...All we can do is have faith.
Nuriko: ...In the end, it looks like that’s all we can do.
Tasuki: …Yer sayin’ that Chiriko’s spirit can take out that leech, Miboshi…?
Tasuki: That’s crazy! His character’s disappeared! He’s just a normal kid now!
Tasuki: If this is yer idea of a rescue plan, then honestly, it sucks!
You: ...But I believe in him.
You: Chiriko!
You: I believe in you. Chiriko... You’re really strong.
Chiriko: How pointless. This body belongs to me now!
You: Chiriko, your spirit won’t lose to anything.
You: So—please—
You: Wake up! Chiriko!!
Chiriko: …ryone...
Tamahome: Hey, Chiriko looks...
Chiriko: Please... hurry up and kill me.
You: Chiriko... It is you.
Chiriko: While I’m—holding Miboshi back!
You: ...Chiriko...
Chiriko: Tasuki-san! Please use your tessen on me! I’ll take Miboshi down with me!
Tasuki: ...Are you crazy...?
Tasuki: No way in hell I can do that!
Chiriko... grabbed the weapon that Miboshi had been carrying.
Chiriko: Boy... just what do you intend to...?
Chiriko: I’m going to stab myself and kill you.
Chiriko: But you’ll die, too, damn it! Before long, this body will belong to—
Chiriko: I won’t lose...
Chiriko: You fool... are you saying you can push me away?
Chiriko: I am... a Celestial Warrior. I am not... a weakling.
Chiriko: Even I can... protect the priestess...
Chiriko: Even I can protect you, [Your Name]-san.
You: Stop it, Chiriko!
Chiriko: In a battle of wills, I don’t intend to lose to anyone. (3)
You: Chiriko! You have to stop it!

Y'know what? Tasuki was right. As far as rescue plans go, this one sucks.
Chiriko: Even without my character, I am still a Celestial Warrior...!!
*stab*
You: Chiri...
*thump*
You: Chiriko!!
Mitsukake: Hang on, I’m going to heal you!
Mitsukake stretched out his hand, but Chiriko gently brushed it aside.

"It's just.. a flesh wound..."
Chiriko: ...You can’t. If you do that, you’ll be saving the thing inside of me as well.
Chiriko: Just leave me... like this...

You: No... you can’t... Chiriko...
Chiriko: I... was finally... of use to you...
You: You’re incredible...
You: You’ve helped me, and all the others, tons of times before this!
You: You can’t die.
You: We’re all gonna keep traveling together! I refuse to let us suffer any more than we already have!
Chiriko: Ah... ugh...
You: If you think my words mean anything at all—
You: I’m begging you, don’t lose to someone like Miboshi!
Mitsukake: ...Chiriko’s character is... starting to glow.
Chichiri: ...The malicious energy is disappearing from Chiriko’s body no da.
You: Mitsukake! Hurry up and heal him!
Mitsukake: Ah... Right!
You: Chiriko...? Why... aren’t you answering...?
You: Mitsukake... healed you, right...?
You: So then... why…?
Mitsukake: Calm down.
Mitsukake: Chiriko’s safe.
You: Huh... but... his eyes are closed...
Mitsukake: He’s just sleeping. He’s exhausted. Listen closely.
Chiriko: *breathing softly*
You: He really is...
You: Chi...Chi...
Chiriko: Ah... good morning... [Your Name]-san.
You: Chiriko~~~!!
Chiriko: Oh, uh, hold on. Um, this is embarrassing...
You: It’s fine! Totally fine! Just gimme a minute!!
Chiriko: Eh... eh...?
Nuriko: You were the best!
Nuriko: Once you’ve grown up, will you marry me?
Chiriko: Ah... er... I’d rather not.
Tasuki: You were a real man out there, Chiriko.
Tasuki: Right, [Your Name]?
You: Mm. You were the coolest.
Chiriko: ...Th-thank you very much.
Tamahome: Oh... you gonna grow up all shy, now!?
Chiriko: I-it’s not that...
You: That’s not it at all! Chiriko’s going to be a fantastic adult. Right, Chiriko?
Chiriko: ...Right.
Chiriko: [Your Name]-san. I’m going to be an adult warrior who protects you.
You: Mm. ...Thanks.
He was getting too serious. I was feeling a little bashful.
Chiriko and I were too embarrassed, but everyone else laughed.

Chiriko: It’s only a matter of time before Miboshi takes over my body again... so...
Chiriko: This is our...only choice...
I stared frantically at Mitsukake.
Mitsukake just shook his head slightly from side to side.
You: ...Chiri...ko...
Chiriko: [Your Name]-san. I beg your forgiveness.
Chiriko: I... really wasn’t of any use to you...
You: That’s not true!!
You: Y-you can’t... you can’t die this easily.
Tamahome: She’s right! What are you talkin’ about!? You... saved us all, didn’t you?
Chichiri: We all know how strong-willed you are no da.
Nuriko: You were totally impressive out there, Chiriko.
Hold on, you guys—why does it sound like you’re saying goodbye...?
Tasuki: It’s crazy how strong you are. I’ve never met a man as great as you.
Mitsukake: We'll never forget you. Never...
Chiriko: Thank you... so much... everyone...
Chiriko gazed up at me.
You: I... you can’t... Chiriko... you can’t go...
—I couldn’t take it.
Chiriko: [Your Name]-san. I was able to... protect you, right?
You: D...don’t go...
Tamahome: [Your Name]. Pull yourself together.
You: But...!
Tamahome: ...You’ve got to say your goodbyes.
…..
I took a short breath.
You: Chiriko... Thank you.
You: You were a fantastic Celestial Warrior—
You: And one of my dearest friends...
Chiriko: ...I’m... glad...
You: We’ll always be together, so...
Chiriko: Always... together…
You: Your feelings, and your strength—I’ll carry them all with me...
You: So we’ll always be together...
Chiriko: ...I’m so... happy...
==White screen==
Chiriko: ...Always... together.
You: Mm...
…..
Chiriko didn’t say anything else. I didn’t think he ever would again.
You: ...Chiriko... thank you...
I didn’t even try to pretend like I wasn’t hurting from the loss.
But... Chiriko’s parting words wouldn’t let me just sit there.
You: I’ve carved your feelings into my heart.
You: I promise I’ll do everything in my power to summon Suzaku.

[Note: I haven’t played this where I came out with both the Shinzaho and Chiriko. This ending scene may be different if you do.]
==Scene: Desert==
…..
Tamahome: It’s not even nighttime yet.
You: ...Mm.
Mitsukake: So much has happened.
You: ...Mm.
I ran into Misaki-chan.
Tatara-san died.
[optional] The Shinzaho was stolen.
I couldn’t save Misaki-chan.
[optional] And then Chiriko died…
Despite all of that, the sky was bright and calm and beautiful.
Obviously, after everything, I was really hurting—
And the next thing knew, I’d started sobbing.
The others didn’t say anything. They just stood by quietly, waiting for me to cry myself out.

~End Part 2, Chapter 2~

Translation Notes:
(1) “For now, you can focus on pushing the two of us onwards no da.” Original Japanese: 今は、二人を押すことに専念するのだ (ima ha, futari wo osu koto ni sen’nen suru no da). Bit of a headscratcher - the “osu” and the “futari” are a bit vague. My initial thought was the futari referred to Misaki and Tatara, but in context I think it makes more sense for him to be referring to himself and the other seishi you chose. I’m leaving it here so someone can correct me if I’m way off base.

(2) “Just one more way you could tell how much they loved each other.” Original Japanese: これもきっと絆の形のひとつ (kore mo kitto kizuna no kata no hitotsu). Literally, “This was also, surely, one shape of their bond.” Vague Japanese is vague! I did some contextual guesswork and buffed it up so it would (a) make sense and (b) sound natural in English. I’m open to suggestions if it seems too broad.

(3) “In a battle of wills” - Literally “if it’s feelings alone” (kimochi dake nara), but it sounded really odd, so I took liberties.
